Course Replaces AUXSAR
The new AUXSC&E course is now available at ANSC and is ready to be taught
in the Districts. This course replaces AUXSAR in the Auxiliary's suite of
AUXOP courses. AUXSC&E, which is the Auxiliary version of the Coast

Coast Guard Adopts
"THE GUARDIAN ETHOS"
I AM AMERICA'S MARITIME GUARDIAN.
I SERVE THE CITIZENS OF THE UNITED STATES.
I WILL PROTECT THEM.
I WILL DEFEND THEM.
I WILL SAVE THEM.
I AM THEIR SHIELD.
FOR THEM I AM SEMPER PARATUS.
I LIVE THE COAST GUARD CORE VALUES.
I AM A GUARDIAN.
WE ARE THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD.
...
The "Guardian Ethos" is not intended to replace the
Coast Guard Creed. . . The Ethos . . . defines the essence of the Coast
Guard, and could be viewed as the contract the Coast Guard and its members
make with the nation and its citizens. . . . The "Guardian Ethos" is the
essence of our service - IT IS WHO WE ARE
We have a proud history of serving
the citizens of the United States in the maritime domain, providing
safety, security and stewardship. As America's maritime guardians,
we protect them, we defend them and we save them. We are their
shield, and we stand always ready for the call to duty. We live the
Coast Guard core values. Individually, we are each guardians, who
have sworn an oath to support and defend the constitution and who adhere
to the Coast Guardsman's Creed. TOGETHER, WE ARE THE UNITED
STATES
COAST GUARD.

NEW PERSONAL QUALIFICATIONS STANDARD
(TelComPQS) A
new Personal Qualifications Standard (PQS) for Auxiliary
Telecommunications has been developed by the Operations (Response)
Department and approved by the National Board and CG Headquarters. The
Chief Director of the Auxiliary has announced the implementation of the
new personal qualification standard (PQS) for a Telecommunications
Operator (TCO) specialty. Effective 1 August 2008, all new applicants for
fixed land or land mobile radio facility certification and/or operation
must be certified as a TCO. Current AUXCOM-rated members will continue to
be eligible for facility ownership and operation indefinitely, as long as
their AUXCOM was earned prior to August 1, 2008. Details of this PQS are
available on the Chief Director’s Web site at "Auxiliary
Telecommunications PQS Announcement 11 June 2008". The PQS for
Auxiliary Telecommunications is posted at "Telecommunications
PQS".

On-Line Bridge Discrepancy
Reporting System - The 1SR Aids to Navigation Department is proud
to announce the availability of this new on-line system to allow on-line
entry of bridge discrepancy reports and bridge survey results, with direct
electronic transfer to the CG Bridge Office. This will speed up the flow
of reports to the Coast Guard, while at the same time providing faster
service and more information back to the members. Additionally, this
system also makes the entire district bridge database accessible to all
members, showing recent discrepancy history and repair actions for each
bridge. Additional information about the new system can be found on the AN
web site at
www.boatmoves.com/CGAux/bdrs.htm, and the on-line system can be
accessed directly at
www.boatmoves.com/CGAux/BridgeDB/Bridges/ An activated login via the
Auxiliary eDirectory system is used for system access security.

DHS Unveils Small Vessel
Security Strategy
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released its new
Small Vessel Security Strategy (SVSS) document (PDF: 1290 KB / 57
pages), designed to close security gaps and reduce risks associated with
the potential exploitation of small maritime vessels. An
online
Fact Sheet on the SVSS is also available. Auxiliarists are encouraged
to become familiar with these documents, and to promote
America's Waterway Watch
Program when conducting RBS activities (teaching public education
courses, conducting vessel safety checks, conducting RBS program visits,
and making speeches to local marinas, yacht clubs, and other groups).

- From CHDIRAUX - DISCONTINUATION OF
BOATING SAFETY HOTLINE -011/08
Coast Guard support of the toll-free
Boating Safety Hotline number
1-800-368-5647 has been discontinued. However, this hotline number is
still displayed in many boating safety materials used and distributed by
the Coast Guard Auxiliary. It is displayed in approximately 2.5 million
separate boating safety items available from the Auxiliary National Supply
Center (ANSC)
ANSC has begun to line out/obliterate the number
wherever it appears in these materials. However, it will not be able to
do so for all of them.
Auxiliarists must therefore review all boating safety materials received
from ANSC and ensure that this hotline number is thoroughly lined
out/obliterated prior to use for training or distribution to the public.
Auxiliary vessel examiners shall pay particular
attention to ensure that the Boating Safety Hotline number on ANSC-7012
Vessel Safety Check forms is thoroughly lined out/obliterated prior to
presenting them to vessel owners/operators at the conclusion of vessel
safety checks. Similarly, Auxiliary public education instructors shall
pay particular attention to ensure that the number is thoroughly lined
out/obliterated in any boating safety course materials prior to
provision to the public.

04/22/2008 -
Reminder ALL PEPIRBS must be properly
maintained. Registration and batteries must be up-to-date. This can
become a safety issue when on a assignment.
Re-registration
can be done on-line at the NOAA site. Batteries are ordered
through your FSO-OP.

The new
electronic testing Center is now available for use by Auxiliary members
seeking qualification in a wide range of mission areas. This "eTesting"
Center is available at

Every Auxiliarist already has an
account on the new National Testing Center, but it must be activated by
following the directions available at the new site. As part of our
effort to reduce the complexity of our electronic resources, activation
of your account on the National Testing Center will rely on information
from your eDirectory account.
